The Los Gatos-Saratoga Union High School District announced Aug. 27 that Los Gatos High School, and the Town would be partnering for an unforgettable remembrance on the 25th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks.
The ceremony, which will honor alumni Mark Bingham and Todd Beamer, who became examples of bravery and sacrifice that day a quarter-century ago for their actions aboard United Airlines Flight 93, which had been hijacked and was headed towards Washington, D.C.
The tribute will also honor all who lost their lives that day, the families and loved ones they left behind, the first responders who ran toward danger, and the military personnel whose service and sacrifice followed.
Mayor Rob Moore will join LGSUHSD Superintendent Heath Rocha for the commemoration, which will include the presentation of colors by the Los Gatos-Monte Sereno Police Department, the national anthem performed by the school’s band and recognition of the Bingham and Beamer families.
A military jet flyover is scheduled for 6:55pm over Helm Field. It’s meant to offer a powerful tribute as the community gathers in remembrance.
The ceremony will also recognize the newly relocated 9/11 memorial plaque, which has been moved from Los Gatos High School’s Redwood Grove to a more prominent location on campus. It’s been re-homed so it’s more accessible to students, staff and community members. The idea was to make it easier for everyone to reflect on the legacy of Bingham and Beamer.

The current crop of students were all born after the events of Sept. 11, 2001. So, the event is designed to present an opportunity to connect with a defining moment in American history—allowing them to think about the stories of individuals who once walked the same hallways as them. And organizers hope the students will reflect on the values of service, leadership, courage, sacrifice and civic responsibility.
The flyover will feature two F-15C Eagles from the 144th Fighter Wing of the California Air National Guard, based at Fresno Air National Guard Base.
“Importantly, there is no cost to the District for the flyover,” a spokesperson said. “The California Air National Guard’s participation is part of the commemoration and provides a particularly meaningful way to mark this historic anniversary with our students and community.”
