Los Gatos Town Attorney Robert Schultz announced his resignation on Nov. 8.

Schultz, who graduated in 1986 from Southwestern University School of Law and was admitted to the State Bar in 1987, was hired by the Los Gatos Town Council in December 2013 to replace retiring town attorney Judith J. Propp.

The resignation takes effect Dec. 30.

“The Town Council respects Mr. Schultz’s dedication and service to Los Gatos,” Mayor Marico Sayoc said in a release. “The value he provided to the Town was truly appreciated and we wish him the best of luck with his future endeavors.”

“His problem-solving skills contributed to sound legal solutions to difficult municipal issues,” according to a Town spokesperson.

Council, which appoints the Town attorney, will now begin a recruitment process.

Prior to arriving in Los Gatos, Schultz served as city attorney for 16 years in Morro Bay in San Luis Obispo County.

He has also provided legal services for the cities of Atascadero, Pismo Beach and San Luis Obispo and served the San Simeon Community Services District and the Guadalupe Redevelopment Agency.

The Town attorney provides legal advice to Council and staff on everything from land use, to public records, to litigation and other technical matters.

Recently, Schultz has been leading a series of community conversations around the possibility of opening up the community to cannabis retailers. Over the past month, Schultz was asked to craft a residential-no-picketing ordinance following actions by conservative community members who have opposed the Town’s efforts to promote diversity policies.
