Two people died after getting out of a car and being struck by another vehicle on Highway 17 in Campbell early Friday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The collision was reported at 4:12am on southbound Highway 17 north of Hamilton Avenue.
CHP officers arrived at the scene and determined that a male and female were in a 2000 Mercedes-Benz that came to a stop in the right lanes of the highway. They then exited the car and were hit by a 2015 Fiat that swerved but was unable to avoid hitting them.
The male victim was pronounced dead at the scene while the female was taken to a hospital and succumbed to her injuries there. Their names were not yet being released. The Fiat driver reported minor injuries in the collision but is expected to survive, according to the CHP.
The cause of the crash, which closed lanes of Highway 17 until shortly before 7am, is under investigation and the CHP said they do not know if impairment played a role. Anyone with information about the case is asked to call the CHP’s San Jose-area office at 408.961.0900.
