Treat yourself to some culture and enjoy the local museum. An afternoon at NUMU might help to beat the mid-winter blues. There’s lots more to do here than just wander around. And in case you did not know, located right next door is Friends of the Library, another great escape.

A mini vacay

Get out of your rut (the house, the office, the car) for an afternoon experience at this local cultural institution. Taking a tour or experiencing a talk might even count as a mini vacation—a small escape. And if you live in town, admission is free.

Girl Scouts go for a badge

This Sunday, Girls Scout Juniors (Grades 4-5) are invited to come from 1-3pm (check-in at 12:45pm) for a program that will result in a Drawing Badge.

The $45 entry fee includes materials and a take-home finished project, museum admission for the day for the participating Scout and one guardian, and the Drawing Badge.

(Each additional accompanying adult receives 50% off museum admission for the day.)

The Los Gatan at NUMU

On Jan. 16, from 11-11:45am, NUMU will hold its “Los Gatos Newspapers History Tour,” where I will be discussing the early days of newspapers in town with Kimberly Snyder, the museum’s executive director.

Humorist Finley Peter Dunne—speaking through his alter-ego, critic “Mr. Dooley”—famously once wrote what’s since been adopted as the motto of news writers everywhere:

“Th newspaper does ivrything f’r us. It runs th’ polis foorce an’ th’’ banks, commands th’ milishy, controls th’ ligislachure, baptizes th’ young, marries th’ foolish, comforts th’ afflicted, afflicts th’ comfortable, buries th’ dead an’ roasts thim aftherward.”

You might know it better as: Comfort the afflicted, afflict the comfortable.

Do you read print media or do you prefer to get your news online? Either way, you are welcome to swing by to find out more about the history of newspapers in our town—from the beginning to today—during this unique event.

Submissions sought from high schoolers

If you know of a high schooler who is an aspiring artist, you might want to encourage them to enter “ArtNow,” a juried show.

Submissions for “ArtNow 2026: Before / Between / Beyond” close Jan. 25, at 11:59pm.

Painting Brownines

In partnership with Girls Scouts of Northern California, on Jan. 24, Brownies (Grades 2-3) will be taking their Painting Badge at the museum. Cost: $45, which includes museum admission for the day for the participating Girl Scout and one guardian.

(Each additional accompanying adult receives 50% off museum admission for the day

Mending workshop

On Sunday, Jan. 31, from 1-4pm, NUMU will hold its “Mending as Repair and Embellishment: Workshop with Jody Alexander” event.

Book and fiber artist Jody Alexander (on view in Stitches & Wiggles) will be at the museum for an afternoon of learning all things mending.

During a three-hour workshop, the artist will teach a variety of mending techniques.
