As part of the Sanborn and Upper Stevens Creek Forest Health Plan, adopted in August 2023 by the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors, Santa Clara County Parks is closing a few hiking trails.

The closures are necessary, officials say, in order to put vital forest-health into place to increase resilience to drought, disease, pests, wildfire, and climate change.

The closures will be in effect during weekdays, from 8am-5pm, but the trails will remain open all day on weekends and holidays.

Which routes are affected?

• Indian Rock and nearby portions of Skyline Trail: Closed on weekdays from Oct. 10- Nov. 2023.
• John Nicholas Trail (between Sunnyvale Mountain and Lake Ranch Trail): Closed on
weekdays from Nov. 27-December 2023.
• John Nicholas Trail (between Black Road and Lake Ranch Trail): Closed on weekdays
starting in December 2023 through early 2024. Exact dates will be provided as project progresses this winter.

County Parks is working in partnership with the Santa Clara County FireSafe Council, South Skyline FireSafe Council, and Cal Fire to implement fuel reduction projects in local parks.

Officials note these collaborations extend to securing grants and partnering with organizations like PG&E, Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District, San Jose
Water and other County departments for effective fuel reduction efforts.
