Put another feather in the cap for Los Gatos High School. Tommy Troy, a 2020 LGHS graduate, stroked two doubles in his Major League Debut in the Arizona Diamondbacks’ 9-1 win over the Colorado Rockies at Chase Field on May 24.

The 5-foot-9, 197-pound Troy started in left field, a position he had never played professionally prior to this season. It capped a whirlwind 36 hours that started shortly after midnight Saturday, when Troy learned he was getting called up to the Big Show from the Diamondbacks Triple-A club, the Reno Aces.

Here is the exchange via the Arizsports’ Instagram reel, which captured the exact moment when Troy received the news.

“I was in my hotel room winding down ready to go to bed and I got a call from Miguel (unidentified) saying he wants to go over some video in the hotel lobby,” Troy said. “I go, ‘I don’t know what that’s about.’ I meet up with him, and they go over some play in the outfield asking if I felt good in left field, if I’m able to go play at Chase.”

It’s at that point when Troy starts to realize something is up. The conversation continued.

“Do you feel comfortable enough to play at Chase?” the unidentified executive asks Troy. “Yeah well, you’re going dude.”

With a look of disbelief, hands on his head, Troy replies, “No way. Said Troy: “Seriously? Oh my gosh. You’ve got to be kidding me.”

In that moment, Troy had realized a dream every kid aspires to when they first start playing baseball. Troy then calls his dad, Tommy Troy Sr., who was initially worried that his son was calling at 1am. The exchange went like this.

Troy: “What are you doing tomorrow?”

Troy Sr.: “What are you talking about?”

Troy: “I just got called up.”

Troy Sr.: “Get the (bleep) out of here.”

Troy: “Yeah (laughing) I did.”

Troy Sr.: “You’ve got to be kidding me.”

Troy: “No, I’m not kidding. I’m not kidding. Love you. I’ll call you again soon.”

Priceless.

After graduating from LGHS, Troy spent three years at Stanford University before getting selected in the first round (12th overall) in the 2023 MLB Draft. The 24-year-old hybrid infielder-outfielder has made steady progression at every level, from high-A rookie ball to Triple-A. He’s played at several other locations in the summer and fall circuits.

In 205 plate appearances for Reno this season, Troy slashed .307/.397/.449. Drafted as a shortstop out of Stanford, Troy has moved primarily to second base and left field. Troy is dangerous on the basepaths, posting an average sprint speed of 29.7 feet/second, according to mlb.com. For context, that number is considered elite.

With his family and his girlfriend’s family in the stands Sunday, Troy made an unforgettable MLB debut. In a turn of events worthy of a Stephen King novel, the Diamondbacks flew to San Francisco late Sunday night to start a three-game set with the hometown Giants.

That means there will likely be dozens of family, friends and anyone associated with LGHS attending at least one of the three games. Diamondbacks TV reporter Jody Jackson caught up with Troy’s parents, Tommy Sr. and Temple, as they watched their son play, per mlb.com.

“I’m still shaking, I’m so happy for him,” Temple said. “I could feel the air vibrating when he was up there.”

Said Tommy Sr.: “It was an amazing experience. You know how hard and how much work he put in to get to this point. And to see him do something he loves, it was a surreal experience.”
