“We do a double smashburger with American cheese, secret sauce and lettuce on a Martin’s potato bun. It’s a burger that’s really got the town hooked. It’s got its own fan base,” says proprietor Tyler MacNiven. “It’s got it all going on. There’s grilled onions in there as well.” Riffing on Buck’s reputation as the spot where the VC elite meet to eat, he jokes, “The smashburger is the perfect order if you want your company to be a smashing success.”

This fast-casual restaurant adds a Central American twist to Burger Week. La Costeña ($15.50) replaces the bun with two crispy fried plantains, wrapped around lettuce, grilled onions, tomato, a secret-recipe beef patty, shredded chicken with sweet corn, cotija cheese, and El Apartamento and pineapple sauces. La Amazonica ($14) “brings the green” with a fresh bun, crisp veggies, a house-made lentil patty, garlic-sautéed mushrooms, cheese, and El Apartamento and pineapple sauces. Add-ons include enchuladas ($7)—loaded fries with chicken, sweet corn and cotija cheese—and fresh juices ($6.50).

San Jose’s O.G. steakhouse puts its own spin on Burger Week: its famous half-pound cheeseburger served with a tri-tip topper ($16.75). That’s right: ground beef (made from the trimmings of New York, top sirloin, filet mignon and ribeye steaks) layered with slices of savory tri-tip. And if that doesn’t suit, swap the tri-tip for smoked pork belly—or prime rib on Fridays and Saturdays.

Though the Burger Week special wasn’t determined by press time at this venerable patty purveyor, there’s at least an even chance that it will include bacon. The regular menu offers six delectable variants graced by pork strips.

Laughing Monk Brewing

This homegrown brewery pairs its own suds (made using California and Belgian brewing traditions) and gastropub fare at locations in Sunnyvale, Scotts Valley and San Francisco. Burger Week diners will find three specials: the Shroomin’ Swiss ($12), with sauteed mushrooms, stout-caramelized onions and arugula; the Island Burger ($15), augmented by cheddar, grilled pineapple, teriyaki aioli, bacon, lettuce, tomato, onion and pickle; and the Barnyard Burger ($18), topped with bacon, cheddar, BBQ pulled pork, coleslaw and onion straws.

Manzanita

Located in the Sonesta Silicon Valley hotel, Manzanita flavors its California cuisine with Latin and Asian influences for indoor/outdoor dining. This week’s special is the Farmer’s Market Smashburger ($25), a combo menu with fries and a glass of house beer. It’s a double patty affair made with certified Angus beef and served with a secret sauce and garnishes inspired by local farmers markets.

One of San Jose’s most illustrious restaurants welcomes Burger Week with two specials. First, there’s a reduced price for Joe’s Famous Burger ($19.95), served with chopped onions and Swiss cheese on a sour roll, accompanied by fries and a drink. Or there’s the Sicilian Burger ($19.95), with roasted Anaheim peppers, jalapeño spread, pepper jack cheese and candied prosciutto, plus fries and a non-alcoholic drink.

In addition to providing live music and karaoke, the Quarter Note sustains its patrons with burgers, augmented with bacon, cheese, lettuce, tomato and onion—plus fries. But for Burger Week, there will be a Bacon Cheeseburger Pizza, with all of the above on board one of Quarter Note’s pies—which, according to owners Vicki and Robert Reese, are really good: “We do everything from scratch.”

Rosy’s at the Beach

A popular Morgan Hill pit stop, Rosy’s will offer summer fun with the Boardwalk Burger ($18), served on a toasted bun with either sharp cheddar or pepper jack. The classic lettuce and tomato garnish is made more mouthwatering with the addition of sautéed onions. Served with french fries and a side of coleslaw.

The Stand

A purveyor of “American classics redefined,” the Stand serves burgers, sandwiches, fries, salads, hot dogs and wraps. On offer for Burger Week is the Jalapeño Bacon Burger ($13.50), the newest addition to the permanent menu. Its beef patty is dressed up with American or pepper jack cheese, grilled onion, roasted and pickled jalapeños, and onion strings, and served on a brioche bun with jalapeño scallion aioli.
